An Australian bakelite sidecast fishing reel made by Steelite is a notable example of practical mid-century angling equipment. Designed for durability and straightforward use, these reels were commonly paired with light fishing rods for estuary, river, and shoreline fishing. The bakelite construction gave the reel a distinctive dark, glossy appearance while keeping it relatively lightweight for its size.

Collectability and care: Steelite sidecast reels are now appreciated by fishing-tackle collectors for their Australian manufacture, period styling, and simple mechanical design. To preserve one, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or extreme heat, which can make older bakelite brittle. Gentle cleaning with a soft cloth and light lubrication of moving metal parts can help maintain both its appearance and working condition. In good condition.
