Vintage Andy Capp
A British Icon, Andy Capp Working Class
Created by cartoonist Reg Smythe in 1957, Andy Capp became one of Britain’s most recognisable comic-strip characters. Set in the fictional northern town of Hartlepool, his flat cap, football obsession and pub-going habits captured a stylised version of working-class life, while his long-suffering wife Flo provided much of the strip’s wit and balance.
Humour, Community and Lasting Appeal
Beyond Andy’s antics, the strip reflected the everyday rhythms of neighbourhood life: familiar pubs, factory talk, local rivalries and the warmth of close-knit communities. Its humour was rooted in observation and exaggeration, making Andy Capp a lasting cultural reference point for generations of readers across Britain and beyond.
